Black Britain and the classic adaptation: integrated casting in television adaptations of Oliver Twist and Little Dorrit / Rachel Carroll
Article - English -
A discussion of the casting of black British actors in non-racially marked roles in two BBC television adaptations of novels by Charles Dickens: 'Oliver Twist' (2007) and 'Little Dorrit' (2008). Suggests that such casting can be read as either an attempt to make visible the historical presence of black people in Victorian Britain, or as an invitation for the audience to view the racial identity of an actor as being irrelevant to his or her role. In: Emmy v31 n5 Sep/Oct 2009, pp. 46-73
